Linux Hosting

Web hosting plans come with a choice of Linux or Windows. Linux hosting offers users the ability to install open source software applications and content management systems. Open Source is ideal, if you are happy with the standard install but be aware that it is harder to customize (or it may not be possible to customize to your liking) and once you create a database website, all sorts of things can go wrong with it that would not have gone wrong if you had a HTML website.

These applications are free but you do need to invest time working out to use it. The minimum hosting plan that is required to run these applications is the Advanced Web Hosting plan. You must order Linux hosting and you will be able to upload and install the following applications.

We list the open source software available but every open source software has its limitations and quirks. If you can't get it working, you will need to hire a developer to assist you or spend a lot of time googling for answers. Generally, if you use open source software in the standard install without making to many hacks to the code, it is more stable. However, be prepared to invest time if you plan to install and use this software.

Installing Open Source Software

To install open source software, you need to

  1. Login to http://domains.passioncomputing.com.au
  2. Click ‘edit’ next to your domain name
  3. Then click ‘hosting control panel’
  4. Then ‘web hosting’
  5. Then ‘manage web packages’
  6. Then you can install the application either into a directory or root and set up your username/password. So if you want it as  your main site you need to make the install location blank and then click ‘install’.Please be careful here. If you have a site in the main index area, ie root folder and then you decide to install a forum in the root folder, this is going to overwrite your site.

To be able to see your website files, you can either use an ftp program or simply login to ftp using the browser. eg. if your site is computingjobs.com.au, then enter into the browser ftp.computingjobs.com.au and enter the ftp username and password, you will see your website files. To have more functionality, we suggest you learn how to use coreftp or another ftp program. Coreftp is free to use. Visit www.coreftp.com to download and install the program and learn to how to use it.

When you login via ftp, you can see your website files. If you have a file and it says it is /wp-login.php, then the corresponding URL will be http://www.yourdomainname.com.au/wp-login.php

and if that folder is inside another folder then you have to add that folder eg. if you had a folder /blogs and the file is called /blogpage.htm, then the corresponding URL is www. http://www.yourdomainname.com.au/blogs/blogpage.htm

Coreftp will allow you to see all the files that are sitting on the server.
