Updating your NS records Name Server Records

Updating your Name Server Records

Once you are logged in, and you have clicked on 'edit' next to the domain name that you wish to manage. the following screen will appear. This screen asks you to enter your primary and secondary name server records.

You have 2 choices: (1) assign the authoritative name servers to your hosting company or (2) delegate your authoritative name servers to TPP Internet, our wholesale partner. You must choose option (1) or (2). You cannot assign domain name records to unrelated name servers.

Choice 1. If you have bought a hosting account, and your hosting company allows you to use their name servers, then you simply need to enter the ns records on this screen and click update and your domain name will point to your hosting company's name servers, and these name servers will then direct your domain name to your website files and mail server.

In the following example, you will see the name server records for passioncomputing.com.au. The primary name server record for passioncomputing.com.au is ns3.webcontrolcenter.com and ip address 216.119.106.4 and secondary name server record ns4.webcontrolcenter.com and ip address of 216.119.102.5. Most hosting accounts include two name server records and you will be given your name server records after you sign up for a hosting account. You will recognize the name server records because it will start with NS or word followed by a number and dot then a domain name. The format will look like ns3.webcontrolcenter.com or brigh.twoplums.com.au and the name server record will always correspond to an ip address.

The vast majority of domain names are pointed to the name servers of the hosting company. If you assign your authoritative name server records to your hosting company, you will not need and cannot use advanced dns management or domain forwarding.

The following screen displays how to edit your ns records to point to your hosting company's name servers. If you are using your hosting company's name servers then this is the only screen that you will need to fill in.

Choice 2:

If you do not have a hosting account, then you will need domain name forwarding or advanced dns services to point your domain name to your website files. You will need to choose to activate domain name forwarding or advanced dns services. Generally, you would choose domain name forwarding if you are directing your domain name to another URL, and you would choose advanced dns services if you were directing your domain name to a static ip. If you choose either of these services, please ensure that the name server recors are as follows

  Host Name ip adreess
 primary name server  brigh.twoplums.com.au  202.125.172.103
 secondary name server mutley.twoplums.com.au 202.125.172.104
